As you begin your first garden your instinct will probably be to garden using only your hands. It probably won't take very long for you to learn just how helpful gardening tools can be. You might start to feel like you need to buy all of the tools that you can get your hands on. Try not to give in to this urge. You might wind up owning a bunch of stuff that you don't really need! Start simply with what you need right now and then, over time, add more tools as they become useful to you. You might discover that you don't need to have a bunch of tools, especially if you have a small garden. Start your tool collection with these gardening tools.

If you are new to gardening, deciding which tools to use can be hard. These are just a few of the more important tools to have on hand if you want to grow an awesome garden.

Having a garden spade in your toolbox is essential if your garden is going to contain smaller and more delicate plants and flowers. Irritating weeds are easy to dig up with a spade. You can also use them to help clear debris and dirt away from your garden plants without your having to worry about accidentally damaging the plant's base. You can use your spade to help with seed planting. It isn't likely that you will use the garden spade every day but it is good to have on hand for those times when you want to do delicate work around your plants. The spade is an incredible time and effort saving tool for people who have lots of different types of gardening projects.

A big rake. Use a garden rake on smaller patches of land. For large plots of land, however, you will need a big rake. Rakes are used for a lot more than the simple gathering of leaves. Before you begin planting, use your big rake to turn and smooth the soil that you will be planting in. You can also use the other side of the rake to smooth out the dirt on the top of your garden. The rake you use to gather leaves will be made from plastic. A rake that is meant for use in the garden, however, is usually made from steel or some other sort of metal.

One garden tool no ground gardener should be without is a shovel. A shovel with a long handle is a very important tool to have on hand, especially if your garden is going to be large. A shovel helps you scoop and move dirt and earth quickly and easily. Shovels produce better results than you would get if you tried to move that dirt by hand. Trying to transport dirt, earth and other items without a shovel just makes your job as a gardener that much harder. Using a long handled shovel saves you lots of time and work while you put your garden together.

Don't worry if you aren't sure which kinds of gardening tools you need. Beginner gardeners are often tempted into buying things they don't need. Instead of giving in to temptation, start with a few simple tools you know you will use and then branch out later on. This will save you time, money and space in your garage or gardening shed. Eventually you will understand exactly which gardening tools do what and you'll know what to use for your various gardening tasks.
