Security guards, either armed or unarmed, require specialized training in order to perform their duties effectively. Proper education for the position they will hold is imperative to having a professional staff. Whether they are for a retail location, an apartment building or high rise, or other sites, having a highly trained guard can be a huge asset and a cost effective security choice.

A professional is expected to act in such a manner. They may be required to deal with the public, employees and patrons of the business they are protecting, and may at times need to cooperate with the police or government persons and should have skills to deal with these situations in a tactful manner at all times.

Guards must be well versed in the local laws as well. Arrest or detention acts must follow proper procedures to avoid legal problems, and laws regarding holding suspects can be specific to the nature of the business they are employed by. They should be trained in the use of handcuffs and restraints if use of them is required. Other items like firearms, pepper spray and batons may require specialized training before use.

The security personnel should always be very familiar with the area they are looking after. Whether the guard will be patrolling on foot or via a video surveillance system, knowing the site inside and out help them deal effectively with issues and problems should they arise. They may also need to guide responders throughout the area in an emergency, or divert people and traffic, and being familiar with the area is vital.

Knowing procedures for writing reports is almost always required for guards. Good skills in verbal and written communication can help them to properly convey information. Using detail when taking notes and describing suspects can be helpful to police. If the site is computerized, knowledge of how to use the equipment is necessary.

Some security guards need to have training in CPR and first aid procedures so they are able to help in an emergency, or at least attend to the situation until responders arrive. Having medical knowledge can help when describing situations over the phone to dispatchers.

Security guards can be vital to the safety of many businesses and buildings. The prevention and deterrence of crime saves money, and a well maintained, and up to date staff of professional security officers can provide peace of mind and protection to any situation.
