A structure called pergola is specially designed roof for a patio. But this is not the only possible setting. It also can be free standing deepening upon the need of a person.

A pergola is basically a terrace without boundary. If you have ever visited Italy, you might have seen such structures in every house there. It is basically Italian in origin and serves the purpose of friends and family meetings. It also is used to arrange parties.

It is usually used for meeting with friends and families and for parties. The vines when grow along the pergola roof give such a beautiful shade that even the lattice styled roof do not do so.

You can even arrange number of pergolas one behind the other on a walk way. When these pergolas are covered with climbing trees like wisteria, grapevines or other green woody vines, they create a shade over the walkway that anyone would love to walk under.

If you go for such an arrangement, the pergola will become the master piece of your backyard. As there is no walls, neither has a pergola a roof as such so you have the feeling of being inside as well as outside at the same time. The presence of structure makes you feel being inside and the entrance of sunlight and air gives the feeling of walking outside.

Creating an outdoor space is easy with pergola. The maintenance cost of it is also low so you can enjoy a soothing backyard atmosphere at a low cost without any compromise on the pleasure you want to have. Perhaps this is what makes it so much a trend in Italy.

If stones are used to build the walkway of the pergola, it will give a very pleasant look to your backyard. Anyone who visits your home will at the very first sight recognize what is so worthy at your backyard and what makes it so beautiful.

The pergola might look odd to some people since the structure is very unusual. But the purpose it serves makes it so different from the common veranda and at the same time very attractive. A fee standing gazebo even looks inferior in front of it.
